“Integrated Communities: A Society for All Ages” Exhibition

As part of a series of exhibitions addressing the “Age of Longevity” held in cities around the globe, the Exhibition features the finalists of the 2004 Student Design Competition 26 projects representing solutions from schools of architecture around the world. Students participated from 28 countries and more than 12 schools of architecture in the United States. The jury reviewed 115 final projects from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Serbia/Montenegro, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom United States, and Viet Nam.

The Competition reinforces the notion that the next generation must, and can, proactively plan for a society of diverse ages, and for one with increasing proportions of older persons. It is, after all going to fall on their shoulders to find solution and support for an ever-increasing population of older persons. It encourages and identifies innovative design concepts that also pragmatically address the needs and aspirations of multi-generation communities. Architecture contributes to a better quality of living environment for all and The Loving Architecture Festival is a celebration of all aspects of the built environment and the people who shape it. The Competition was organized in conjunction with United Nations partners: Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the Programme on Ageing, ICT Task Force. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The Competition Chair: Mr. Joaquin Ayuso, CEO, Grupo Ferrovial, Madrid, Spain, and Vice Chairs: Dean Urs Peter Gauchat, New Jersey School of Architecture, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Dr. Tomonori Matsuo, President, Toyo University, Tokyo, Japan, and Mr. Akira Yamashita, Architect, USA/ Japan and a worldwide Advisory Board contributed to the success of this unique program.  Exhibitions have been held at United Nations Headquarters during the Commission for Social Development, Toyo University, Tokyo, Japan and plans are being finalized for Dubai and London.
