Over 275 entries were received from 31 countries: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Sweden Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, United States, Uzbekistan, Yugoslavia. A renowned international jury of gerontologists and architects reviewed the 70 approved projects.
February 11-28: Student Design Exhibition "A Society for All Ages," at United Nations, NY. features 28 finalists from 13 countries: Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Ecuador, Japan, Russia, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, and the United States .
The Competition has been organized in support of the 2nd World Assembly on Ageing, 2002, Madrid and will be exhibited from April 5-12th at the Assembly. Established in 1995 in support of Habitat II, the Competition is a bridge between research and practice endeavoring to prepare the next generation with the tools essential to enhance the quality of life for the fast growing "graying society."
This Competition is organized in conjunction with United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the Programme on Ageing, Department of Economics and Social Affairs, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The Competition Chair was Mr. Shingo Nomura, Chairman of the Chikyu Club Network 2002 and Co-Chairs of the event were Mr. and Mrs. Nikolaus Heidegger. Others participating in the program Ms. Lyutha Al-Mughairy, Chief, Public Liaison Service, DPI, Dr. Alexander Sidorenko, Chief, Programme on Ageing, United Nations and Ms. Laura Licchi, UN-HABITAT.
Dean Urs Gauchat, New Jersey School of Architecture, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Competition Vice Chair and member of the International Jury presented the winning projects and Competition Vice Chair Mr. Akira Yamashita, President/Architect Akria Yamashita and Associates presented finalists Certificates of Achievement and prize awards during the International Conference "Caring Communities for the 21st Century: Imagining the Possible" Thursday, 14th February at the United Nations.
